About Us

MRS. INDERJIT KHURANA
Mrs. Inderjit Khurana is known as the founder and guiding spirit of the Train Platform School Movement in India. As founder & principal of the private school, the Ruchika High School in Bhubaneswar,Orissa, Mrs. Khurana began paying special attention to children who lived and worked on the platforms of the Bhubaneswar railway station. The Ruchika Social Service Organization, has 117 centres of non-formal education which includes: 6 creches, 20 pre-schools, a shelter for destitute children, a vocational training centre, 6 street education centres, 12 train platform schools, and a medical and nutritional program. Before founding the Ruchika Social Service Organization, Mrs. Khurana worked with children for over twenty-five years. Ms. Khurana earned a BA from Isabella Thobure College, in Lucknow as well as a diploma in early childhood and primary education. She later assisted Mother Teresa for a year in her work with destitute children and is also an honorary Ashoka fellow.
LT. COL. SURINDAR SINGH KHURANA
Born in Lahore Mr. Khurana was educated in Amritsar. He finished engineering at Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute – [VJTI], Mumbai. A sportsman at heart he took part in Athletic and Hockey championship in his college level. He joined the army in the Engineering core. He has worked extensively in North Easter Frontier Agency now called Arunachal Pradesh. He has participated in 3 wars China 1962, Pakistan 1971, and Goa 1961. He retired from the army in 1977 and shifted to Bhubaneswar. He joined Indersons Construction and made two bridges one in Balasore and the other in Barkot near Deogarh. He joined Ruchika in 1985 when he retired from Indersons. He was the backbone of the school. He looked after the finances and all administrative functions.

Ruchika was the first Preschool to be setup in Bhubaneswar in the year 1978 by Mrs. Inderjit Khurana. The school aims to provide the children a harmonious environment to achieve holistic growth and excellence in their areas of Endeavour’s. It initiates a process of confidence building, learning, and exploring which continues all through their lives. After being in Forest Park for over 20 years the school finally came to its final location at Ganga Nagar in 2012. In 2015 Mrs. Leena Khurana took over as the Principal and in 2019 it was merged into Ruchika High School.

The focus of the Ruchika School Social Service Wing is the child in difficult circumstances — the working child, on the street and in the slums, abandoned and destitute. The uniqueness of this programme lies in the fact that a so called elitist school stretched out its expertise in education to children in a novel innovative way, using the minimum of equipment, purloining only existing public infrastructure — temple platform, market square, roadsides et alia, to make literacy a reality for 1,700 deprived children everyday. The model demonstrates that it is possible to eliminate illiteracy by:
  • Reaching out to children
  • Having programmes which are relevant to their life experiences
  • Having a committed teacher
  • Using available, physical infrastructure
  • Having flexible timings.
The biggest obstacle in the way of any economic or educational betterment in India is the sheer magnitude of the problem — this model has been one way to improve the situation for some children. This hope sustains us in our efforts.
